Little Jamaica this Summer in the City
Little Jamaica, the famous Toronto neighbourhood for over 100 years has been home to many diverse residents from the African diaspora. Jamaican residency in the neighbourhood really picked up in 1950s due to immigration reform. Since then, the impact of Jamaican culture has long shaped this neighbourhood through, business, food, events, and more. As early as 1987, you can find a Toronto Star article that refers to the area as the "Little Jamaica" section of the City.

We interviewed Cheryll who is working with local Little Jamaican Community organization Oakwood Vaughan Community Organization (OVCO) on a plan for the future of the community that has been dramatically impacted by the transit improvements that have been taking place since 2015 along Eglinton Avenue.

Advancing the City of Toronto's Community Benefits Framework
On Wednesday, the Toronto Community Benefits Network and partners deputed at the City of Toronto Executive Committee to make recommendations on improving the City’s Community Benefits Framework which was established in 2019.
While TCBN is encouraged by the details of the staff report, which outlines key actions steps for advancing the municipal Community Benefits framework, we are disappointed that the City Executive Committee failed to address our key recommendations to require bolder steps in the implementation of its Community Benefits Framework in response to the immediacy of the economic crisis facing Black, Indgenous and other racialized people in our City.

West Park Healthcare Centre
The development project will include a new, approximately 730,000 square foot hospital building, providing various inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services. Outpatient care space will be significantly increased to accommodate current and new services such as geriatric clinics and day hospital, and satellite hemodialysis. Eighty per cent of the beds will be in single-patient rooms.
Community And Green Benefits
- The project will adhere to the guidelines and sustainability principles of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system, with a goal of achieving the LEED®Silver certification or higher. LEED buildings focus on healthy indoor environments, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and efficient use of energy, water and other resources.
- Expansion of green space and extensive landscaping for outdoor therapy areas and therapeutic gardens.
Economic Benefits
The West Park Healthcare Centre Redevelopment is significant economic opportunity for local suppliers and contractors. At the peak of construction, EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare estimates that more than 500 people will be on site daily.
