Career Track in Construction

Career Track in Construction Research Project

This Capacity Building Project will propose recommendations for how employers with commitment to community benefits can successfully identify skilled, diverse workers through a Standardized Apprenticeship Readiness Curriculum and a Transparent Employment and Apprenticeship Tracking System. It is a project led by TCBN in partnership with Ontario Construction Secretariat, Metrolinx, Contractors with signed CBAs, selected Unions and construction pre-apprenticeship training centres.

The overall goal of the project is to achieve standardized and coordinated industry recognized systems for preparing, recruiting, tracking, and retaining individuals from local communities in jobs made possible by Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs). The Career Track Project has been developed to support the implementation of CBAs not only in GTA, but across Ontario wherever building projects with community benefits agreements are being implemented.

Project partners are working together to achieve the following:

  • Research and Development: Conducting a review of current systems and processes to identify best practices and propose system prototypes that can be adapted for different regions and demographics. Download Literature Review and Stakeholder Report.
  • Apprenticeship Readiness Curriculum: Preparing candidates for CBA hiring to meet the requirements of employers and labour unions.
  • Joint Marketing Plan: Creating a centralized process for employers with community benefits agreements to find diverse workers with the skills they need.
  • CBA Tracking System: Supporting work ready individuals to find sustained employment with contractors with
CBA requirements and complete their apprenticeships.

This community-based research project is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario. The Government of Ontario and its agencies are in no way bound by any recommendations contained in this document.
