Ontario Line Good Jobs and Training Opportunities

Join us for an update and discussion on good local jobs, training opportunities and social procurement as part of the Ontario Line Subway. As a community-labour coalition, we are seeking commitments from Metrolinx and the Provincial government for a Community Benefits Agreement as part of the project.
During this meeting, we will:
  • Provide an update from TCBN on the Ontario Line (transit subway) and our campaign to ensure Metrolinx and the Provincial government deliver on commitments for a Community Benefits Agreement that will ensure good local jobs for equity deserving community members and social procurement opportunities for local businesses and social enterprises
  • Provide an opportunity to hear from local elected officials (MPP Adil Shamji, Don Valley East and MPP Stephanie Bowman, Don Valley West)
  • Provide an update on the announcement from Infrastructure Ontario on the Thorncliffe Park Station transit oriented communities proposal and upcoming opportunities for community input in Winter 2024
  • Hear the stories of Community Benefits Ambassadors who have benefitted from meaningful employment and apprenticeship opportunities on projects with Community Benefits Agreements in Toronto
  • Information on current TCBN and member programs and training opportunities
  • Information on upcoming Metrolinx and Connect6ix Ontario Line job fairs in January
Let's work together to ensure similar standards, good jobs and local community benefits opportunities continue with the Ontario Line.
Similar commitments have been included on previous Metrolinx projects like the Eglinton Crosstown LRT where over 550 apprentices, journeypersons, professionals, administrative and technical persons have been hired from local communities and equity deserving groups. In addition, over $17.6M in contracts have been awarded to local businesses and social enterprises through social procurement.
As a community-labour coalition, we are seeking commitments from Metrolinx and the Provincial government for a Community Benefits Agreement as part of the project and that these commitments are reflected in contracts with the companies selected to build the Ontario Line.

Federal Government Funding - Commitment for a Community Benefits Agreement
As part of the federal government's $10.4B funding contribution for the four new priority transit projects including the Eglinton West Extension LRT, a commitment was made to ensure these public projects "maximize high quality jobs and benefits for communities including through mechanisms such as Community Benefit Agreements with hiring targets of at least 10% for historically disadvantaged communities, equity-seeking groups, Black, Indigenous and people of colour, with possible higher targets based on an assessment of local representation"
This condition was included after significant advocacy from community and labour groups, nonprofits, community benefits coalitions and foundations from across Canada who supported the TCBN-led InclusiveRecovery campaign calling on the federal government to ensure the planned $187B in federal infrastructure investments include commitments to good local jobs for Black, Indigenous and racialized communities.
