NEWS

Update Downsview Secondary Plan and Community Development Plan

This month, Toronto City Council will be voting on the Downsview Secondary Plan and Community Development Plan that will guide the future of a 30+ year development at Downsview. On Tuesday, TCBN deputed and submitted a letter in full support of the Downsview Community Development Plan and eight priority areas which aligns with our vision for Downsview as a thriving, inclusive, diverse, affordable and environmentally sustainable neighbourhood for decades to come. Our letter also includes targets and expectations identified through our CBAforDownsview campaign. Thank you to Local City Councillor James Pasternak for moving a motion to ensure Community Benefit Plans as part of future District Plan submissions.

With an estimated $380M of public investment to host six FIFA2026 games in Toronto, TCBN continues to advocate for a Community Benefits Agreement and legacy plans that ensure local and equity deserving communities are at the table and benefit from the prosperity of these games.

Downsview Climate Action Workshop Highlights

Thank you to everyone who attended the Downsview Climate Action Workshop last week at the Downsview Library! Participants were able to engage with the concepts of climate justice, sustainable development and advocacy as it relates to the proposed 30+ year Downsview development plan. The event included brainstorming sessions and small group discussions on green jobs, buildings and built environment, mobility, accessibility, parks and green spaces.

OUR PROGRAMS

The Ontario Line, Canada’s largest public infrastructure project in history, risks being built without any meaningful benefits for the community. In November 2022, Metrolinx awarded 50% of the project in contracts with private developers, valued at about $15 billion, without any mention of the promised Community Benefits Agreement as announced.

TCBN is looking for Youth Delegates to join our Youth Policy Table. Organizations that are invested in equity-deserving groups accessing good jobs in the construction sector, are encouraged to refer youth delegates. We are seeking referrals of Black, Indigenous, and other racialized (BIPOC) youth aged 16-25.

The NexGen Builders Mentoring program offers development seminars for mentees and mentors in the first two months, weekly calls and monthly face to face meetings between mentors and mentees, and quarterly networking opportunities.

Assists Black youth aged 16-34, to find a job in construction in skilled, unionized trades or professional, administrative, or technical positions in a construction company. Also provides professional development training and work placements.
